  The outbreak of new coronavirus pneumonia poses a major threat to people's health. At present, the epidemic situation is still very serious, the number of suspected cases is huge, which brings great pressure to clinicians' diagnosis and treatment. The epidemic has spread to a wide geographical area, posing a serious challenge to primary hospitals that lack experience in diagnosis and treatment. The "New Coronavirus Pneumonia Intelligent Assisted Diagnosis System", developed by Academician Zheng You and Academician Jiahong Dong of Tsinghua University, has successfully passed the application test and entered the clinical trial stage, which is expected to provide solutions to these problems.

  Based on the precious clinical data of newly diagnosed cases of new coronavirus pneumonia in Wuhan, the project carries out big data analysis, deeply learns the CT image characteristics of the disease through artificial intelligence, and establishes the intelligent recognition function of the new coronavirus pneumonia image. Furthermore, according to the fifth edition of the National Diagnosis and Treatment Plan for Pneumonia Infected by New Coronavirus, an intelligent diagnostic module combining imaging with key clinical information in epidemiology, symptoms and testing is established. Subsequently, an adaptive clinical typing module for the severity of novel coronavirus pneumonia was established by intelligent interpretation of respiratory function parameters. Finally, the three modules of image diagnosis, clinical diagnosis and clinical classification are integrated into a "new intelligent auxiliary diagnosis system for coronavirus pneumonia" which combines clinical and imaging, and three functions of intelligent image diagnosis, clinical diagnosis and clinical classification are realized simultaneously.

  The system can complete chest CT screening of a large number of suspected cases within a short period of time and conduct comprehensive clinical and imaging analysis according to the guidelines, significantly improving the diagnostic performance of the new coronavirus pneumonia, and is expected to significantly reduce the workload of clinicians and imaging physicians, as well as enabling early diagnosis and timely treatment of patients, thereby improving patient prognosis and reducing mortality.

  At the same time, the system can empower primary hospitals and community health centers, improve the diagnosis of novel coronavirus pneumonia by primary care physicians, and promote the homogenization of the diagnosis and treatment of this emerging infectious disease among different levels of medical institutions. In addition, the system can accurately classify patients according to the severity of the disease, facilitating rapid classification and treatment, and rationalizing the allocation of medical resources.

  Faced with the severe epidemic, Tsinghua University actively response to the call of the country, set up emergency scientific research projects for epidemic prevention and control, organized medical and engineering experts, and accelerated the promotion of scientific and technological research achievements for epidemic prevention and control.

  The new intelligent auxiliary diagnostic system for coronavirus pneumonia is one of the first emergency research projects of Tsinghua University, with Academician Zheng You of the Department of Precision Instruments and Academician Jiahong Dong of the Clinical Medical College as the co-principal researchers. Under the leadership of the two academicians and with the support of the leaders and experts from the two Wuhan designated hospitals for the new coronavirus pneumonia, a medical research-enterprise fusion innovation team was rapidly established, which was led by the Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, the Department of Precision Instruments of Tsinghua University, the Central South Hospital of Wuhan University, the Tianyou Hospital of Wuhan University of Science and Technology, and the Beijing Jing Diagnostics Technology Company. Relying on the accumulated technical reserve and cutting-edge technology in the field of industrial integration, after 10 days and nights of struggle, the "new intelligent auxiliary diagnosis system for coronavirus pneumonia" has achieved initial success.(Reviewer Xin Liu)
