An international physician training model was introduced to accelerate the internationalization of medical education in Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital

  Since the beginning of its foundation, Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, the main teaching hospital of School of Clinical Medicine of Tsinghua University, has introduced an international physician training model, basing on the residency-specialty integrated physician training model of Changgung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. The hospital has established a number of educational cooperation projects, including faculty development project, with Harvard Medical School, as well as educational exchanges and training with Mayo Clinic, University of Washington Medical Center, University of Melbourne Medical School and other internationally renowned medical schools. It has set up the "Hundred Talents Plan" for the overseas training of young key personnel, the “Overseas Degree Training Programme” for young physicians, and the "Tsinghua Medical Talents programme", which has trained 55 outstanding young physicians. Drawing on advanced international teaching concepts and experience, the hospial strives to be at the forefront of the deepening reform of medical education and to promote the internationalization of medical education.

  Since the establishment of the hospital in 2014, the leadership of the hospital attaches great importance to education and teaching work. The hospital has achieved repeated successes in the construction of residential training bases: a total of 11 national standardized training bases for resident and 2 pilot standardized training bases for specialists were established. In 2018, the hospital became one of the first 74 national demonstration center of clinical teaching and training. On 23 September 2019, the hospital welcomed the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Hong Kong College of Surgeons (RCSE&CSHK) for evaluation of the general surgery residency-training base. In May 2020, RCSE&CSHK confirmed that our hospital has formally passed the RCSE&CSHK training base certification assessment, which marked a new step in the introduction of international physician training model and an important milestone in the internationalization of medical education in our hospital. The certification has laid a solid foundation for the hospital to establish a world-standard, high-level system of training, assessment and examination for surgeons in the future.

  At present, only three hospitals in Beijing have been accredited by the RCSE&CSHK or the Hong Kong College of Osteopathic Medicine (HKCOS). They provided important reference and rich experience for our hospital to build a demonstration training base for general surgery of RCSE & CSHK. In order to promote the construction of the general surgery training base of RCSE&CSHK, the hospital has made a construction plan, basing on the comprehensive investigation of the three hospitals and the actual situation in our hospital. In the future, the hospital will use RCSE&CSHK training base certification as an opportunity to establish a world-standard system of training, assessment and examination, improve the level of specialist, update the medical education concept, and cultivate international talents. In addition, we will increase exchanges and visits with domestic and overseas renowned medical schools, and broaden the mode of cooperation with existing partner institutions, by establishing long-term cooperation mechanisms and reaching multiparty strategic training agreements. We will commit ourselves to implement the international physician training model by cooperating with domestic and overseas renowned medical schools, and accelerate the internationalization of medical education.

  1. Development of Faculty

  Tsinghua Changgung Hospital has launched the "Faculty Development Program, FDP" with Harvard Medical School. First 61 key faculty members have sent to expand their international vision and improve their teaching ability. To learn the advanced concepts of education, teaching, and development from first-class international medical centers, we have organized many field visits to these medical centers and invited their faculty members to our hospital to carry out special trainings, discussing the latest concepts of medical education and teaching. We have also established internal teaching faculty employing system, selected excellent teaching faculty to participate in domestic training programs, and simultaneously carried out standardized advanced training courses in the hospital. Prompted by both the outer and inner efforts, the hospital has successfully created a backbone team of teaching faculty with excellent teaching ability. On the basis of the RCSE & CSHK training, we will continue to train young key faculty members and build a core group of English clinical teaching faculty members who are capable of organizing English lectures, teaching rounds, case discussions, and journal clubs.

  2. Development of Training

  Continuing the exchange form of "invite in + send out", we will establish long-term cooperation with RCSE&CSHK, inviting RCSE&CSHK teachers to carry out lectures and clinical teaching activities in our hospital and sending excellent clinical instructors and trainees to Hong Kong for intensive training. We will set up special courses for MRCS and FRCS examination preparation, which would further improve the proficiency of our teaching team and the quality of our resident-specialist physician training.

  3. Introduction of incentives

  In order to motivate residents and specialists to apply for MRCS and FRCS examination, and increase competitiveness of examination application, we have introduced many incentives, such as providing physicians who pass the MRCS and FRCS examination with salary not lower than that of peer hospitals, covering all textbook fees, examination fees, and travel expenses due to examination, encouraging them to participate in high-quality domestic and overseas academic conferences, and giving priority to physicians who pass the MRCS and FRCS examination in promotion of clinical position and teaching position, and applications of longitudinal research projects and talent project.(Reviewed Bin Shu)
