By innovatively applying precision surgery to intrahepatic bile duct diseases, including intrahepatic stone, bile duct dilatation, and hilar cholangiocarcinoma, Professor Dong has successfully changed the treatment pattern from symptom alleviation to complete cure. He has also refined the strategy of liver transplantation using the paradigm of precision surgery, largely improving the treatment of end-stage hepatobiliary diseases. In extracorporeal liver resection and auto-transplantation, he and his team have optimized and standardized the procedure, and have demonstrated success in applying it to the treatment of end-stage hepatic echinococcosis. These results have a major impact on and have changed the practice of hepatobiliary surgery worldwide.

Professor Dong’s contributions to the advancement of medical sciences have been recognized locally and globally. He has been awarded, among others, the National Award of Science and Technology Progress, Second Class as first contributor and First Class as co-director.
