On May 30, the 20th Anniversary Precision Surgery Conference opened at the Main Building of Tsinghua University. The event was hosted by the Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Committee of the Chinese Research Hospital Association and co-organized by Tsinghua University School of Clinical Medicine and Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital.

Attendees included Bai Benfeng, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of Tsinghua University; He Zhenxi, President of the Chinese Research Hospital Association; and Academician Dong Jiahong, President of Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, who chaired the conference.

The "Precision Surgery" paradigm was first established by Academician Dong Jiahong in 2006. In his address, Dong emphasized that precision surgery is not merely a technological refinement, but a fundamental redefinition of the nature, value orientation, and ultimate purpose of surgery. Its core tenet is a shift from "technical precision" to "supreme benevolence"—achieving minimal trauma, optimal functional preservation, and maximal long-term survival benefit—thereby returning to the patient-centered essence of medicine.

Bai Benfeng noted that precision surgery exemplifies multidisciplinary integration and innovation. Tsinghua University will leverage its comprehensive academic strengths to advance precision surgery toward intelligent and engineering-driven frontiers, contributing to China's self-reliance in medical science and technology while offering more Chinese standards and solutions to the world.

He Zhenxi remarked that precision surgery represents a landmark achievement in China's independent medical innovation and its rise to global leadership. Deeply aligned with the Healthy China strategy and the vision for research-oriented hospitals, precision surgery has become a widely recognized practical paradigm in the international surgical community.

Professor Pierre-Alain Clavien — Member of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine, President of the European Surgical Association, and Professor at the University of Zurich — stated that precision surgery marks a revolutionary shift in surgical mindset, shifting surgical practice away from reliance on experience toward scientific decision-making, precision and full controllability.

Professor Henri Bismuth—Founding President of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, Founding President of the European Surgical Association, and Emeritus Professor at the University of Paris—conveyed via video message that the maturation of precision surgery has shown the world the original power and leading capability of Chinese medical thought.

Professor Yuman Fong, Chair of the Department of Surgery at City of Hope National Medical Center in the United States, noted that precision surgery—by anchoring itself in patient value—has fundamentally reshaped the goals and pathways of surgical treatment.

Academician Chen Chao-Long, Honorary Superintendent of Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, expressed the hope that, empowered by emerging technologies, precision surgery will advance toward greater minimal invasiveness, higher intelligence, and more personalized care.

At the opening ceremony, the Precision Digestive Surgery Academy was officially inaugurated, alongside the release of the Proceedings of the 20th Anniversary Precision Surgery Conference. The conference gathered keynote talks delivered by 10 Members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, more than 40 hospital directors, and over 60 nationally renowned top specialists.

On May 29 and 31, three parallel forums were held: “Excellence in Practice – Precision Techniques”, “Frontier Exploration – Wings of Precision”, and “High-Quality Development of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery”. In addition, a forum on Human-centered Care – The Foundation of Precision and the ACA Hepatobiliary Surgery Live Broadcast took place, further enriching the academic exchange.
