(Translated By YU.Y.C.) Recently, the 50th anniversary congress of Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis(AOI) was held in Leiden, the Netherlands. Wang Yaxing, an associate professor at Tsinghua Medicine , executive director of the Beijing Visual Science and Translational Eye Research Institute (BERI), and an expert at the Ophthalmology Center of Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, was elected as an academician of the International Academy of Ophthalmology. This honor is known as "the highest honor in the world of ophthalmology".

At the conference , Professor Richard Abbott, the chairperson of AOI, and the board members presented Wang Yaxing with the academician medal and certificate. As the youngest sitting academician of AOI, Wang Yaxing has long been committed to promoting basic and clinical research as well as translational research in ophthalmology, focusing on the morphology and mechanism of glaucoma and high myopia, ophthalmic imaging and epidemiology. Her achievements have had a wide influence internationally.

AOI was founded in 1975 and its headquarters is located in Belgium. As one of the world's most influential ophthalmology academic organizations, AOI is committed to promoting high-level ophthalmology education, basic research and clinical services worldwide, and advancing the development of human visual health. The AOI Academician is a lifetime honor, with only 100 positions available worldwide. As of now, AOI has 97 top ophthalmologists from 33 countries, among whom 8 experts from China are included.
Tsinghua University and Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital currently have two AOI academicians (Professor Tien Yin Wong and Associate Professor Wang Yaxing), ranking first among all universities and medical institutions in China. It is not only a high recognition of the individual's outstanding academic influence, but also marks that Tsinghua University's comprehensive strength and international influence in the global ophthalmology field have reached a new height.In the future, the Ophthalmology Department of Tsinghua University will continue to join hands with the group of academicians of AOI to actively promote the progress of global eye health and contribute more Chinese wisdom and strength to the strategy of preventing and treating blindness.
